I didn"t think that I would like Las Vegas. I don't gamble, and I prefer natural attractions like geological wonders and wilderness beauty to any man-made features. I thought that I would be revolted by the crass commercialism and the over-the-top glitzy excess.

Instead, I was pleasantly suprised when I first saw Las Vegas over ten years ago. It was gaudy, glitzy and excessive beyond description. It was over-the-top and tacky. Here was a modern-day Babylon of sensual delight constructed on a monumental scale in a barren desert converted into a commercial playground. It was fueled by greed, corruption and the insatiable thist for gratification.

I felt like an ancient pilgrim entering the valley of kings in Egypt to marvel at the immense pyramids and architectural wonders. Or, like a country farmer from the far-flung provinces of the old Roman Empire upon first entering the imperial city of Rome with its unfanthomable splendor.

As I drove down the Strip for the first time, I gaped at the immense glass pyramid with its larger-than-original Sphinx entry, at the scaled-down version of the New York skyline complete with Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty, at the tropical island paradise surrounding a faux volcano that spouted fiery eruptions every hour, at the full-sized Piazza del Marco and at the half-sized Eifel Tower. I marvelled at the miles of neon lights and the multitude of fountains and waterfalls gracing this converted desert wasteland. There is no other place like it on this planet.

Here was the world's most unique monument to excess and greed, but it was great fun. You could partake of culinary feasts and a plethora of entertainment diversions at reasonable prices. You could gawk at faux architectural splendor for free. All this is provided to you by the great gambling casinos in hopes of enticing you into their gaming halls. I love it!

Since Las Vegas is the favorite destination for most US native tourists, the airlines provide a wide selection of inexpensive flights to the city from everywhere in the USA. For the same reason, car rentals and hotel rates are frequently available at bargain prices. I just spent a few days in Vegas, and was amazed at the numerous bargains available. Even the newer, fancier casinos were offering rooms at less than $100 per night on weekdays. The older, less popular hotels were offering rooms at less than half that price. I even saw some rooms advertised as low as $29 per night.

Nearly all of the casinos were offering package deals that included meals at their restaurants and entertainment tickets for a single bargain price. If you don't gamble and lose your money at the gaming tables, Las Vegas can be a bargain vacation.

I love Las Vegas for another reason. It is centrally located in the Southwest part of the USA in the midst of some of the most spectacular natural scenery in the world. The Grand Canyon or Sedona are less than a half-day drive from the Strip. Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon are about the same distance. Red Rock Canyon, the Valley of Fire and Death Valley are even closer.

On this most recent trip, I took advantage of the cheap airfares, inexpensive car rentals and bargain priced accommodations to fly into Las Vegas, to see a Broadway style musical, to have dinner at a fine restaurant, then went hiking in the scenic beauty of Red Rock Canyon. It was great fun and it was inexpensive.

Er fing seine Reise in Kalifornien an, fuhr nach Norden durch Oregon und Washington, und machte seinen Weg durch die USA durch Texas und Louisianna auf dem Weg zur Ostküste. Wir hörten von ihm zuletzt von Asheville North Carolina, ehe er nichts mehr von sich hören liess. With the US dollar at an all-time low against the Euro and other currencies, now is a great time to find vacation bargains in the USA. The USA offers some great destinations for winter vacations and some outstanding bargain shopping opportunities. Why not think about a winter vacation in the sunny climates of Florida or the Southwestern states combined with a shopping expedition?

Florida is one of the most popular winter vacation destinations for many European visitors, and it offers a mild sunny climate during the winter months along with beautiful beaches, golf courses, fishing opportunities and an array of amusement attractions. It also has some great bargain shopping malls especially near Orlando and in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale areas. At this time, the hotel accommodations, the car rentals and the vacation house rentals are priced very competitively.

Las Vegas is one of the most popular winter vacation destinations for US residents. It offers a warm dry desert climate along with fabulous casino-hotels, golf courses, restaurants and hundreds of world-class entertainment venues. Most of the casinos and hotels are now offering some really great bargains on accommodations and on packages including entertainment and dining. There are several large bargain outlet malls in the vicinity.

Phoenix and Tucson in the deserts of southern Arizona are often overlooked by foreign visitors, but are perennial favorite winter vacation destinations for US residents. These cities both offer a diverse array of cultural and sports activities, a myriad of golf courses and lots of shopping opportunities. Accommodations and car rental rates are very reasonable in both locations.

I just returned from a short trip to Las Vegas and Tucson. It was the beginning of November and folks were walking about with short trousers, tee shirts or halter tops during the daytime, and without a jacket at night. Many folks were lounging by the swimming pools basking in the warm sun, and a few were even venturing into the water. In the desert surrounding Tucson, the midday sun was oppressively hot, but the nights were cool and comfortable.

If you want to escape the cold winter weather of the northern climates, and find a few shopping bargains at the same time, why not plan a trip to the southern parts of the USA?

Farewell to Bryan

Some of you may be wondering what happened to Bryan. He started out in California, drove north to Oregon and Washington, then wound his way across the USA, passing through Texas and Louisiana on his way to the East Coast. He was last heard from in Asheville North Carolina, before he totally disappeared. Bryan actually drove north from Asheville on a sidetrip to visit some friends in New York, and suffered an unfortunate mishap. He, somehow, injured his leg rather severely. Salí de Spokane el miércoles a la tarde y el sol ya se estaba poniendo. La pasé muy bien con Justin, pero era hora de partir. Ya estoy aprendiendo cuándo es hora de seguir camino. El incendio más grande, conocido como el incendio estación, ha estado quemando descontroladamente por casi un mes cerca de Los Ángeles. Ha destruido muchas casas suburbanas y deteriorado la calidad del aire de Los Ángeles. Los bomberos finalmente han logrado contener el fuego. Por el momento está contenido en un 98% y sus efectos han disminuido considerablemente. Ahora Ud. podrá visitar Los Ángeles sin tener que preocuparse por la contaminación del humo. Es ist jetzt zu 98% gelöscht und seine Effekte sind sehr vermindert. Le grand incendie, connu sous le nom de feu de station pompier, incontrolable a brûlé autour de Los Angeles pendant plus d' un mois. Los Angeles Fires contained

The great wildfire, known as the station fire, has burned out of control for nearly a month near Los Angeles. It caused the destruction of many suburban homes and the deterioration of the air quality in Los Angeles. Firefighters have finally prevailed in containing the fire. It is now nearly 98% contained and its effects are greatly diminished. You can now visit Los Angeles without worrying about smoke pollution. Unfortunately, the normal air pollution from autos is still an issue.

Anoche me llamó mi padre. Aparentemente, la van que he estado esperando cambiar por mi coche ha sido declarada una pérdida total. Mein Vater hat mich gestern angerufen. Es scheint, als ob der Van, auf den ich gewartet habe dass er repariert wird und für den ich mein Auto eintauschen wollte, ein totaler Verlust ist. Das heisst, dass die Reparatur mehr kosten würde als der Van wert ist. Darum bekomme ich nicht den Van, doch brauche ich auch nicht länger in Washington verbringen. 昨晩、父が電話して来ました。どうやら私が車と交換しようと待っているバンは完全に廃車になったらしいです。破損を修理する金額はバンの車体価格よりとても高くなることを意味しています。バンと交換しないことにしたので、ワシントン州にこれ以上居る必要はありません。私は夕食を食べずに自分の部屋に入れられたのに窓から脱出し、自由になったのにまだお腹がすいている子供のように感じました。たぶんオートディーラーで私の車を売ることができたけれども、自分の車で旅行を継続することができると思いました。私は旅行に行くことを切望していて、計画より早くスポケーンを出発します。今日、出発します。私はスポケーンとボイス（アイダホ州）間の小さな町々や森林地帯を通り南へ向かいます。ヘルズキャニオン国立公園をだいたい目指していますが、今日はそこまでたどり着けないと思います。訳 :Yoko Sugiyama...(read more)
