The distance between Las Vegas and South Lake Tahoe is about 455 miles (732 km). It would take 8 1/2 hours of driving, without stops. So plan on making this a 2 day drive. I have not driven the roads between these two destinations. However, for the most part you will be on state route 95 through Nevada. This is not a major highway like the interstate. For much if it I beleive it will be single lane in each direction. But Nevada is arid and at a lower elevation. So you are not likely to encounter snow there. At Fallon Nevada you will want to take State Route 50 to South Lake Tahoe. At this point you will be driving into the mountains. It will be possible to encounter snow. You can rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The rental fees are higher. But no matter what car you are driving the key is to drive wisely. Take it slow and keep calm. If there is snow keep a slow steady pace while going up hill. The momentum will help you keep traction. When going down hill, put the car in a low gear. This will allow you to go slowly and minimize using your breaks. Hitting the breaks too hard on ice is something that can make the car skid. In the mountain passes it is possible that tire chains will be required if the conditions warrant it. Rental cars don't come with tire chains. And if it is required, you will have to put them on, even if you have 4 wheel drive. However there will likely be stores along the way into the mountains who will be happy to sell you chains. Here is the CA Department of Transportation recommendations for winter driving. http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/wntrdriv.htm Just before you travel you can check the condition of highway 50 here. http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi Beware that conditions can change suddenly. So what you see online before you depart can be different than what you encounter when you arrive. Here's the Nevada Dept of Transportation Road Conditions page http://safetravelusa.com/nv/. You can also search for directions on Google Maps. www.google.com/maps. Their maps feature photos of the roads. These are not live. I think they were most likely taken in the summer months. But you can look to see if the road is single lane, double lane, if it looks very windy or steep.
