    Driving across America

If like myself and hubby, you plan to drive across America, obviously it's easy in these days of Sat Nav,  but if like us you rely on good old maps and directions etc, we've found that the Rand McNally website is brilliant.  It lets you plan your trip from start to finish, gives mileage calculations, estimated times of the journey, directions and a map of how to get there etc.  You can plan your start and finish points, adding stops or editing your route wherever.  We used this a few years ago when we flew into San Francisco and out of Los Angeles.  In between we visited Napa, Tahoe, Yosemite, Sequoia, Death Valley, Vegas, Grand Canyon, Lake Havasu .....  the website sorted the whole trip out for us and we followed it to the letter.  We intend to use it again this year when we fly into Vegas, out of San Franciso, doing various National Parks and other places in between.  If you don't have Sat Nav try it - it's very good.

    Hi Christine,

My girlfriend and I were thinking about doing the same trip.  We will be flying in from Boston.  Did you guys rent a car?  If so who did you go through?

    Thanks,

    Phil

    Hi Phil

We rented our car through Alamo.  Our trip will start in Las Vegas and end in San Francisco, so we will be doing a "one way drop off trip", on this basis we're told that the drop off point is the airport, not an agency in town, this suits us as parking in San Francisco is extremely expensive at the hotels and we won't need our car there anyway.  We've been to SF before and know what we want to do, so intend using public means plus our own two feet !

Incidentally, although we booked car hire through Alamo, we went through Trailfinders who we booked flights with, as they had a better deal at the time than going direct through Alamo site.

Hope this info is of use to you, have a great trip

    Christine
