Travel from New York to LA

Hi there all, I'm travelling throught the States this month. I'll be going to La Vegas and then to New York. Then I'll have about 8 days to get back to LA for my departing flight.

I was wondering what is worth seeing and the easiest way to travel (obvious air travel) but maybe some car hire on some nice drives.

Any tips would be greatly apreciated as there is too much to see in a short amount of time.

    Thanking you in advance.

    Hey,

Driving from New York to LA would take about 4 days of about 10 hours driving per day, without stops to see the sights.

What is worth seeing is quite a difficult question to answer.  You are traveling pretty much the entire width of the country which means that you have everything to see in between!

But since you are traveling now, I recommend heading south where you will still encounter some warmer climates.  You can head town to Tennessee and stop at the Smoky Mountains National Park.  At this time of year you should see some of the nice fall foliage.  http://www.nps.gov/grsm

If the outdoors aren't your thing but music is, stop at Nashville Tennesee or Memphis Tennessee.  Both are well known music cities for Country and Blues.  www.usaourist.com/english/places/tennessee/nashville.html and www.usatourist.com/english/places/tennessee/memphis.html

Further west, Santa Fe New Mexico is a good stop.  Santa Fe is known for it's southwest architechture.  It is also a haven for artists.  A visit to the various galleries can find a great momento of your trip.

Not far from LA is Joshua Tree National Park.  This park is popular among rock climbers but can certainly be enjoyed by all.  http://www.nps.gov/jotr/index.htm

I would not attempt driving across the USA.  You will spend most of the 8 days behind the steering wheel of your car looking at some very dull and boring scenery as you pass through the endless cornfields of the Midwest.

I suggest you fly West to Las Vegas or Los Angeles, then rent a car and explore the spectacular scenery of the Southwest.  From Los Vegas it is only a 5 hour drive to the Grand Canyon, 5 hours to Sedona, 3 hours to Zion NP, 4 hours to Bryce Canyon and 2 hours to Death Valley.  With a week to spend exploring; you could see dozens of spectacular sites.

Re: Travel from New York to LA

Hi Michelle and Mike, thanks for the advice. Well have been offline for a while, so haven't had a chance to reply. Am in New York still, at least till the end of the week. I was thinking of then heading to Washington for a day or two then flying to either San Fran or LA. I fly out of La so was leaning towards SF, then driving to Yosemite and then maybe to Death Vallet before heading to LA.

Thank you again for you advice.

    Cheers Xavier
