I am looking to travel somewhere with the wife for our anniversary the week before Labor Day. We would prefer the beach but have ruled out the Caribbean and Mexico (Yucatan) due to huricane season and the extreme heat and humidity. We love wine and food and cooking so have contemplated a Napa tour, but the wife still wants to work in the beach.
Any other options for that week that would be fun in the sun? Or nice resorts near SF and Napa. Please let me know your suggestions.

Santa Barbara is a great beach town. It is about two hours drive north of Los Angeles. It has a great beach with less tourists than LA. It is an upscale area with many getaway homes of movie stars and business moguls. It has some nice accommodations and some really good restaurants. Now that the Michael Jackson trial is finished, the crowds of reporters will be gone.
Santa Barbara is situated near the southern edge of the Central Coast wine country of California. This area is famous for great Pinot Noir, but it also produces some other good varietals as well. It is only a half hour drive to the nearby vineyards and wineries. The Skandinavian village of Solvang California is located in the wine country.
If you see the movie "Sideways", you will get some views of this area and a peek into some of its restaurants.
