Sedona Arizona has been a magical, mysterious, even religious destination for at least a thousand years. Early Native Americans came to Sedona for their various rituals, for marriages, for rites of passage and for their Shaman ceremonies. It is easy to see why they chose this place. The natural scenic beauty is so spectacular that it induces a reverential awe in nearly every first-time visitor.

The red rocks of Sedona rise in thousand foot hight cliffs. bluffs and mesas throughout the lush green valley. The rocks have eroded into interesting and strange confirmations resembling towers, cathedrals, fortresses and other shapes too varied to describe. When the sun descends to the western horizon at the end of the day, the red rocks become enflamed in scarlet illumination.

It is not as immense as the Grand Canyon which is located less than two hours drive to the north, but it is far more accessible. At the big canyon, you can stand on the rim at various viewing points and peer down into its magnificent splendor. In order to experience the Grand Canyon up close, you must either hike down into the abyss or you must ride mules down the long precarious trail. There is no easy access into the Grand Canyon.

In Sedona, you are right in the midst of all the scenic splendor. The village of Sedona sits in the lush valley surrounded by red rock cliffs with spectacular bluffs or mesas rising out of the valley floor all around. You can drive your car throughout the valley and into many of the adjacent canyons to experience the beauty of this place at close range. You can hike, bike, ride a horse or walk to many of the attractions. You can golf in the shadows of the great red cliffs or can stay at a hotel at the foot of some spectacular rock formations.

Folks that are into the new age spiritual movement, have declared that Sedona is the location of some of the natural vortexes of the universe. These vortexes supposedly offer curative powers or sources of energy for spiritual regeneration. When you visit Sedona, you can go to one or more of the vortex locations and absorb this universal energy source. I personally think it helps if you take along a bottle of good wine.

This reputation for vortexes has inspired many of the local spas to offer recuperative regimens based on various spiritual or metaphysical theories. You can find plenty of Yoga classes, meditation sessions and other spiritual cures along with the usual mud baths, facials and massages at the Sedona spas. Local souvenir shops offer copper bracelets, crystals, magic rocks, native american amulets and other metaphysical baubles.

We will be adding a page of information about Sedona on our USATourist.com web site very soon.

    re: Sedona Arizona

    Sedona is beautiful and breathtaking.

I've visited arizona 4 times previously and 2 or 3 times of these,

I've been to Sedona, it is my favorite place.

the red-brown mountains against the green cacti and the bluest skies

I can ever recall seeing are all a stunning contrast to each other.

it is also, imho a very peaceful place to enjoy the scenery and the desert.

I hope someday I could spend winters out there and summers in new england.

well it the meantime, I will visit arizona any chance I get, starting with just after christmas this year

and visit with some of my family out there over new year's.

    :)
